Queen of /v/ 2024 is the sixth edition of the annual Queen of /v/ tournament. It started on November 8th, 2024.

The Elite Eight marked the return of three previous members in the form of former runner-ups, Tifa Lockhart (from 2020) and Madotsuki (from 2021), along with a third appearance by Shantae. Joining them were five newcomers: Baiken from Guilty Gear, the Hex Maniac trainer from Pokémon, Palutena from Kid Icarus, Ayla from Chrono Trigger, and Hatsune Miku. Initial reactions toward this line-up were generally mixed, with recurring complaints of it being either disappointing or simply boring. Some of this count potentially be attributed to upsets that occurred during the third and fourth rounds of the tournament, with some vocal favorites like the Princess from Slay the Princess, Cirno from Touhou Project, Felicia from Darkstalkers, or Pixie from Shin Megami Tensei all losing out. Out of the line-up, two particularly controversial additions were Miku and Hex: the former for not originally being a video game character by technicality (having been whitelisted to even participate) and the latter over general critique stemming from her original role as a generic NPC type in the Pokémon games. Hex had an especially active campaign that seemed to further split thread opinion on the candidate, with her active push helping to take her to 3rd place. This year's Elite Eight was particularly low-seeding, with only Shantae succeeding from the top 10 seeds and three girls being in the lower half of the year's seeds.

Despite the complaints around the tournament as a whole, the finals ended up being a surprisingly tame face-off between Madotsuki and Ayla. A lot of attention had been garnered around Ayla off her shockingly strong underdog run and generally fun campaigning in later rounds, but in the end Madotsuki still won the crown by a fair margin. She was quickly accepted as a good winner by most anons, though she did receive some lighter critiques on either being too standard or winning under a weaker tournament year. Madotsuki would very notably become the first former runner-up from one of the major four tournaments to later come back to win (after losing 2021 to Recette), and furthermore the first to do this in 4chan character tournament aside from Ms. /mlp/. Despite the winner's solid reception, the tournament itself was generally disregarded as a disappointment for Queen of /v/ in particular. The deteriorating thread quality was the primary culprit for this, with a disproportionately large amount of falseflagging and spite that arose throughout the tournament.

How to nominate

• Character must appear in a video game (vidya)
• You must post the image, type the character name AND the correct series name (e.g. [I nominate] Link from Legend of Zelda)
• 10 replies / (You)s are needed in a single thread to qualify as a nominee.
• One nominee per post only
• Check the nomination list (Ctrl+F, click the "three vertical dots" icon, and enter character name) to see if your girl is already nominated

Character / series eligibility

• FOTM Clause: Characters who first appeared at the month before the start of this contest (October 01 and later) are banned.
• Visual novels / eroge games / galgames are allowed (e.g. Fate, Steins;Gate, Hunie Pop)
• Characters debuting in non-vidya media that is part of an established vidya franchise are accepted. (e.g. Miss Pauling first appeared in WAR! Comic, a tie-in webcomic to Team Fortress 2's WAR! Update. Fate/Apocrypha is originally a light novel, but Jeanne d'Arc also appears in the gacha game Fate/Grand Order; furthermore, the Fate franchise began as a visual novel. Uma Musume was first announced as a mobile gacha game, but it was delayed to the point that the anime came out first; regardless, both the game and the anime are equally popular among fans.)
• Characters debuting in a game that is part of a non-vidya / multimedia franchise are accepted (e.g. Android 21 from Dragon Ball FighterZ is a game-original fighter despite being part of the wider Dragon Ball manga series. Iroha Tamaki is the protagonist of Magia Record, a mobile gacha game spinoff of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which began as a 2011 anime.)
• Characters that do not debut in a video game may be accepted if they are deemed to have a sufficiently strong presence in /v/ board culture, or are better known for their video game appearance. (e.g. Geralt @ The Witcher, AM @ I Have no Mouth)
• Characters who are not male/female or whose gender is unknown are eligible for both Queen and King tournaments, but if they appear in the main bracket in the Queen contest, they will be ineligible for nomination in King (and vice versa).
• Spinoffs and crossovers are counted as separate series. This rule mainly applies to characters debuting and/or are better known from said series. (e.g. Leona @ King of Fighters, Joker @ Persona, Sora @ Kingdom Hearts, Master Hand @ Super Smash Bros., Wario @ Wario series)
  • However, if a given character has previously appeared in another game prior to being featured in a spinoff/crossover/guest appearance, they will be entered under their original series whenever the host deems it convenient.
• No fan-made characters, including memes, OCs and custom characters (e.g. Anonymous Guy, Coomer, Coldsteel the Hedgeheg, Create-A-Player from NBA 2K )
• No inanimate objects (e.g. L-Block, Ebony & Ivory)
• No grandfather clause: a contestant that appears here may not be allowed for future editions (e.g. Ebony & Ivory after 2021)

Whitelist

Starting with King of /v/ 2022, the concept of a whitelist was introduced to allow certain characters to circumvent the usual rules of entry if they were deemed to have significant enough /v/idya history and got voted through by anons. Despite growing controversy around this decision, a vote was NOT yet held to eliminate or otherwise replace it. The following characters were both voted to be whitelisted and subsequently qualified for the bracket:

• Hatsune Miku from the Project DIVA video games
• Roll Caskett from Mega Man Legends (as a separate entity from classic Roll)

Right around 1400 characters were successfully nominated for this tournament, a new record for Queen of /v/. A maximum of 3 girls per series can enter the bracket.

While not explicitly said, this tournament seemed to quietly roll back the extra restrictions on both the previous year's Elite Eight series and the then-five champion series. Despite this, the rule did not need to be applied in practice for this tournament, most surprisingly in the case of Touhou Project (with only Cirno reaching the bar to qualify).

Tournament Format

The tournament bracket

128 characters, SINGLE ELIMINATION. This tournament used a randomized bracket using a seed generated by a randomizer program to verify its legitimate randomness; the seed used for this bracket is "20243". If multiple characters have the same amount of qualifier votes, the higher seed goes to whoever is nominated properly first. If a match ends in a tie then the higher seed wins the round.

Following an error in which two instances of Essex from Azur Lane (one nominated as "Essex" and the other under the meme name "Sex") were both qualified and placed in the bracket, the old randomized bracket had to be discarded and a new one created in its place. The old, unused randomized bracket layout can be found here.

All rounds begin and end at Eastern Time evening hours (UTC-04:00, around 20:00~22:00).
