+ 4chan's /a/ - Anime & Manga board + Search results on Archive.org + Latest bracket state before the cancellation (Archive.org)
|
SaiGAR 2008 was the second tournament hosted by the user "SaiGAR Guy" on 4chan's /a/ board, and the sequel of the original 2007 tournament won by Berserk's Guts. Like the previous year, it was modeled after the all-girls 2channel Saimoe Tournament in Japan, but instead of deciding the "most moe" anime girl, the Western-majority /a/nonymous 4chan crowd voted on who they thought or felt was the most "GAR": the manliest, most badass anime guy of all time of all animes released in 2007. Unlike its Japanese inspiration, the tournament was open to all genders, NOT limited to just male characters only.
SaiGAR 2008 began with the nominations on 2007 November 11 and was prematurely canceled on 2008 February 24, in what would have been day 7 of the last 16 round. At that time, six guys have already advanced to the Elite Eight: Hosaka the buff guy from Minami-ke, Shark Fujishiro and Nagasumi Michishio from Mermaid Bride, Lordgenome the lone Gurren Lagann survivor, Giovanni the Team Rocket boss from Pokemon, and Jeremiah Gottwald aka "Orange" from Code Geass.
Based on whatever information that remains today, the tournament appeared to be a complete mess, fraught with trolls, controversial matches, plus accusations AND confessions of cheating. SaiGAR Guy eventually called it quits after he can't take the heat from /a/nons anymore, and abandoned the website indefinitely.
Since this tournament, discussions about saimoe and saiGAR on /a/ steadily declined, while attempts to revive a similar contest on the board were met with either indifference or immediate deletion from the jannies. A decade after the last SaiGAR, /a/'s rival animation-themed board /co/ started their own character tournaments, which became popular enough that it spawned spin-offs on several more boards. However, many /a/ users still maintain a cold attitude towards these kinds of events and are unlikely to change their minds.
Nomination Rules[edit]
The nominations ran from 2007 November 19 to December 23.[1]
- Nominate up to 5 characters
- Any gender is eligible
- Character must appear in an anime released from 2006 December 01 to 2007 November 30
- Nominations must strictly follow Japanese naming customs: Family name before Given name (e.g. enter Itou Kaiji, NOT Kaiji Itou). This rule does NOT apply to people with Western names (e.g. Joseph Joestar)
- All anime shows will use Japanese names by default, unless the anime is notable enough to warrant using its English title, translated or official (e.g.JoJo's Bizarre Adventure instead of JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken).
- The ballot will use a weighted system: Your #1 nomination will receive 5 points, #2 receives 4 points, etc.
- Top 144 characters with the most points qualify for the main tournament.
- Among them, 16 with the most points are seeded into opposing sides of each block, and will not meet each other until the block finals (last 16).

Round 2[edit]
Final 48 characters
- It is a direct continuation of Round 1 — on each block, the winners of R1 Match 1-2-3 fight each other, and likewise for 4-5-6
- 16 matches
- Vote 1 per match
- 1st advances to Last 16 / Block Finals
Final 16[edit]
Since the remaining rounds are 1v1, this Wiki will group them all into a single bracket.
- Last 16: Block Finals; a continuation of the previous round
- Elite Eight: All block winners would have been re-drawn into a single 8-man bracket to decide the champion.
- ↑ This voice actor is Playing As Himself
- ↑ Cameo appearance. He is originally from Haruhi Suzumiya
- ↑ Koichiro Ohta apparently made a cameo on Hayate the Combat Butler season 1, but this Wiki has not yet found proof that he did. If Koichiro did NOT appear in Hayate, then he should have been ineligible, because the last Gunbuster release — Gunbuster vs. Diebuster — was on 2006 October 10, nearly two months short of the earliest eligible date.
- ↑ Cameo appearance; voice actor Shinichi Watanabe is playing as a fictional version of himself. This character originally appeared in Excel Saga.
