General Grievous
General Grievous, born as Qymaen jai Sheelal, is a major antagonist featured in the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. He first appeared in Genndy Tartakovsky's 2003 TV series Star Wars: Clone Wars (a "micro-series" consisting mostly of 3-minute episodes), before making his live-action debut as a computer-generated character in the 2005 film Revenge of the Sith. Grievous later appears as a major villain in the 2008 CGI TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. In most of his appearances, Grievous is depicted as an alien cyborg general who harbors an intense hatred towards the Republic, and is dreaded for his multi-armed lightsaber skills (despite being Force-insensitive), strategic abilities, and killing many Jedi. He seeks to take revenge on the Jedi and the Republic for neglecting his war-torn homeworld by allying himself to the Sith.
Grievous is one of the most popular characters in Mr. /co/lympus tournaments not just from the series' mainstream popularity, but because of his highly distinctive and meme-able traits, which makes him the frequent subject of many fan-arts. He competed in all four editions since 2018 to 2021, making his first Elite Eight appearance in the latter and going on to become the champion after beating Samurai Jack, Marvin the Martian, and Hank Hill in the last three rounds. Because of his victory, he is ineligible for future Mr. /co/lympus tournaments.
Outside of the Mr. /co/lympus tournaments, the cyborg general is notable for his use as a reaction image across the different boards, as well as being one of the few Star Wars characters to get consistent threads on /co/ through the years, including the creation of a gijinka alter ego based on him.
Tournament History[edit]
Grievous' first appeared in the inaugural Mr. /co/ntest in 2018. He got a poor seed (#116), and predictably lost to Spider-Man in the first round with little to no fanfare. Despite a rather underwhelming first showing, Grievous would quickly prove himself to be a competitor who shouldn’t be understimated.
The Knight Slayer finally rose to prominence in the following Mr. /co/lympus 2019, particularly for famously defeating the then flavor-of-the-month Mao Mao as a #117 seed in the very first round. Grievous would go on to defeat Marvin the Martian -with whom Grievous would continue to be associated with in the future- and Eddy to reach the Sweet 16. His dark horse run ended after losing to eventual champion Kronk, depriving him of a spot in the Elite Eight. Despite falling short, Grievous' entire run was very successful and seen as the highlight of the tournament not only in terms of results, but also because he received many pieces of fanart from drawfags, making him the character with the biggest amount of fanart among the Mr. /co/lympus roster, a position he still holds to this day.
The general's seed then improved to #38 in Mr. /co/lympus 2020, placing him in Bracket H -one of the deadlier groups due to the presence of two Elite Eight guys (JJJ and Shaggy) as well as other several fan-favorites such as Spear. Unfortunately for the alien general, he faced JJJ in the second round, and ended up becoming an early casualty as he fell by 19 votes despite the support behind him. Grievous would stick around for the rest of the tournament, forming a partnership with Kronk as the bouncers for the wedding of Samurai Jack and Simon, during which he developed an intense hatred towards Jackie Lyon Thomas' forced antics. This culminated in Grievous preventing Jackie from catching the bouquet toss, letting the adorable deerfox Twig catch it instead by the will of the GETs.
Grievous' final crowing achievement would come in 2021. Having earned his highest seed yet (#16), the cyborg general then went on to experience a string of victories which would take him all the way to the finals, having became champion after beating Marvin for a second time during the semifinals, the other new Elite Eight member who was going on a monster run, and the veteran Hank Hill as his rival for a spot in the Mr. /co/lympus pantheon. While the Knight Slayer is now ineligible because of his victory, he will still be around to judge other characters and belittle their failures, and to angrily hand out trophies to future winners.
