Kermit the Frog
Kermit the Frog is a puppet character from The Muppets series, additionally appearing in series such as Sesame Street. Kermit is generally seen as the main nomination for the puppet side of /co/, often being the only puppet candidate on the bracket. Kermit is easily the most successful puppet candidate in the competition's history, getting qualified for seven Mr. /co/lympus competitions in a row (every eligible tournament to date) and having several strong showings that have currently culminated in him reaching the finals of Mr. /co/lympus 2024. Typically, Kermit's presence in tournament threads has often taken up the form of lighter forms of roleplay befitting of the character.
One day he'll find the rainbow connection...
Tournament History[edit]
Humble Beginnings[edit]
With puppets being historically allowed on /co/, Kermit was an immediate qualifier for the inaugural Mr. /co/lympus tournament held in 2018. Unfortunately for him, his first tournament run was unluckily cut short after a "narrow" loss to Captain America in the second round. While at least a couple of anons did admit to the match-up being a tough choice, the later revelations of Cap's rigging by the tournament host did bring into question the results of this match-up. While it's generally agreed that at least every Captain America match-up Courage and onward was rigged (or initially attempted to be in the case of the first champion, Johnny Bravo), some later analysis has considered Kermit as the first character who might have been rigged out.
As the tournaments began to become a recurring affair, Kermit would become a mainstay qualifier. Even as early as 2019, he would be given positive attention as a well-liked contestant from various anons in tournament threads, with mentions of him as a potentially strong top eight and a couple correctly even predicting his future ease in qualify. Of course, there were at least a few who were worried about him getting too far in the tournaments due to his status as a puppet over what are regularly considered more traditional forms of animation. Kermit began to pick up serious steam as a contender during Mr. /co/lympus 2020, with his loss to Wall-E in the third round surprising a number of anons who saw and pushed Kermit as the favorite to win that match-up. Despite this, he had begun to solidify himself as a quieter tournament favorite by this point in time, with him getting solid attention in the threads throughout the tournament.
Ups and Downs on the Roller Coaster of /co/[edit]
Kermit's momentum from the prior year would only carry into 2021, where he would open strong with his highest seed to date and by extension his currently sole placement in the top ten seeds. His momentum would carry him into the top 16 for the very first time, where he was pitted against the ever-potent Samurai Jack. Despite the challenge in front of him, Kermit would end up giving a worthy fight against the samurai warrior. In the end, Jack would win out by a mere two votes, among the closest margins of victory to date in a later Mr. /co/lympus round to date. Kermit would remain in discussion as a strong potential Elite Eight contender, but would hit a stroke of poor luck in 2022 when he lost surprisingly early after an unfortunate second round match-up against Courage. This happenstance could admittedly be tossed up in part to the then-new adoption of randomized brackets into the tournaments, yet nonetheless it marked a quicker end to his 2022 run.
Kermit would have better luck at first during Mr. /co/lympus 2023. He managed to once again pull off three consecutive wins once again, notably being matched up against fellow perfect attendees Lord Hater and Gaston back-to-back in the second and third round. Déjà vu would begin to hit, however, when he was once again paired up with a returning Samurai Jack in the fourth round. Many were hoping that he would pull off the win this time after their close match back in 2021, but despite coming into the fourth round this time with a quieter run Jack would regain enough momentum to once again defeat Kermit by a much more serious margin than the prior match-up between the two. This was seen as a rough moment for Kermit, and marked six consecutive years of him not making the Elite Eight despite much anticipation and speculation over the possibility. While Kermit wasn't quite written off at this time, this particular loss was seen as at least a more sobering moment for the Muppet frog.
Seven is a Lucky Number[edit]
At the start of Mr. /co/lympus 2024, business seemed to be going as usual at first. After he mostly breezed through the first two rounds, Kermit did have a closer brush in a surprise consecutive rematch against Gaston. He had started to regain at least slight presence in the tournament threads by this time, but many were anticipating his run to be cut short once again after he was faced up against the powerful fan favorite Carl Brutananadilewski from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. By a remarkable four vote difference, however, Kermit was able to pull off an upset and finally make an overdue debut into the Elite Eight. This win was a game changer that brought far more attention to Kermit than even his previous peaks. While his new record run did bring up at least a few naysayers over his status as a literal puppet and to a lesser extent his more mellow campaign, on the whole he was quite well-received as a new elite contestant after such a long time of speculation over it.
Despite him making his own Elite Eight return after five years, Bugs Bunny didn't have enough momentum on his side to take down the younger of the two classic icons as Kermit made a smooth run into the semi-finals. In stark comparison, his rematch against Courage was a harder one to call in advance. A lot had seemed to be riding on Courage to finally make finals, between an active campaign throughout the whole tournament, discussion throughout tournament threads, and his generally strong track record both in the past and present. Still, in a closer bout Kermit managed to defeat the purple powerhouse and make his way into the finals. A culmination of years of tournament hype, this was a huge deal for the character. He was paired against another new Elite Eight member, Spider-Man, whom had just come off a tougher bout against yet another elite newcomer in Popeye. While all three had marched in to share the tournament stage after so long, in the end there was one of the three that had garnered particularly strong vocal support by that point. Despite his impressive run and a reasonable enough (if relatively more reserved) showing in the finals, by the end many were not surprised when it was Spider-Man who took the win in the end by a fair margin. Kermit may have lost here, but despite that he had at least been vindicated after so many years of close calls in Mr. /co/.
The Future Can Be Quite Surprising[edit]
As per the usual Elite Eight rule, Kermit will be sitting out the tournament in 2025. As such, he will next be able to qualify in Mr. /co/lympus 2026. It is unknown if he will be able to come close to his remarkable 2024 run, but if there's any close to guarantee it's that he will likely be back once again to at least try.
