Felix the Cat
Felix the Cat is a character from the franchise of the same name. Created in 1919 by Otto Messmer and Pat Sullivan, Felix is the oldest character to make a major tournament. Massively popular during his silent film era, he is considered the first massive cartoon character and the symbol of the silent era of film animation. While later characters like Mickey Mouse overtook him in popularity, he remains one of the most influential creations in animation history. He later received a revival through the 1950s Felix the Cat TV series, which introduced notable aspects like the Bag of Tricks, and is also notable for starring in the 90s cult cartoon series Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat
Tournament History[edit]
Mr. /co/lympus[edit]
Despite not appearing in any new animated media since 2004 (thank Don "Coconut Fred" Oriolo for that), Felix's influence and prior work has allowed him to contend in the Mr. /co/lympus tournaments. However, while regularly getting close to the cutoff, Felix has only qualified for the tournament once, specifically in 2019 where he received a 115th seed during a celebration of his 100th anniversary. While he was swiftly eliminated in a cat fight with 2020 winner Tom Cat in Round 1, he did make an impact in terms of tournament discussion.
Felix has not qualified for any Mr. /co/lympus tournaments since. He was in contention for a slot in the 2020 tournament, but ultimately fell a few votes short with 63/70 votes required (163rd). Felix again got close to the bracket in 2021 tournament, but would again fall short by 3 votes with 101/104 votes needed (148th). A minor controversy would occur when the hosts mentioned before the official results when asked how characters did that Felix received 106 votes, which would have been enough to qualify, while the official results showed 101 votes. Felix would uneventfully not qualify for 2022 and 2023, receiving 88/111 (294th) and 21/36 (363rd) required votes, respectfully. 2024 had Felix fare better but still miss the cutoff, receiving 70/79 required votes (182nd).
Next 128[edit]
Given his placing in 2024's qualifier poll, Felix qualified for the inaugural The Next 128 side tournament. Felix was noted for having an active campaign, as many took advantage of his appearance given he has not appeared in the main tournament since 2019. Strong support led him to break out into the inaugural Elite Eight, as his legacy made him be considered as potential inaugural winner. This support led him to the finals, where he had a black cat-themed match against John Blacksad with the well-natured and respectful finale led to to the two being seen as having a broship. Felix would ultimately lose the finale and be unofficially crowned 130th place for the year's tournament.
Tag-Team[edit]
He has also appeared in multiple Tag-Team Tournaments, often varying who he is paired with due to his solo nature leading to no obvious, direct pairing in his universe.
His first outing had him paired with fellow centenarian Koko the Clown in 2019 to form the 100th Anniversary Boys. This team lost the first round to Samurai Jack and Johnny Bravo. Felix would fail to qualify in the 2020 tournament There was also a weird arc after he missed out on being paired with Oswald we don't discuss that.
2021 had him reunite with Koko, with the team renamed The OGs. This would turn out to be their strongest run, making it into the Elite Eight and receiving a 3rd place finish. However, due to the large chaos and controversies of the tournament itself the accomplishment was largely ignored, with many later laminating that a deep run with Felix and Koko had to happen during this tournament.
Felix would next qualify in 2024, being paired with John Blacksad as Bad Luck Black Cats to nod to their Next 128 battle. They were well-received as a duo, making it to the 4th round before being eliminated by 'Men of Action'.
