The /an/lympics 2023

The /an/lympics 2023 was the first-ever tournament in the /an/imals & Nature board of 4chan, contested by all organisms in the universe — not limited to just animals. The idea and organization came from plus4chan's /tnt/. The /an/lympics used a standard format seen in most of this Wiki's tournaments — nominations, qualifiers, a 128-player single-elimination bracket, and a special distinction for entrants who reach the Elite Eight.

4th place Gorilla (2)
Quarter-finals 5th: Shark (13)

7th: Axolotl (8)
8th: Orangutan (10)

The tournament was hosted by BallsAnon !!TSeJH+Shkly, a tripfag with prior experience in hosting 4chan and plus4chan polling events. It began with the nominations on May 20 and ended with the champion announced on May 29. The crows were voted as the inaugural /an/lympics winner, defeating the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex in the final by a tally of 72-48. The remaining elite eight entrants consisted of one amphibian, two apes, and three marine animals.

Synopsis

Due to the tournament's lax rules on nominating contestants, several entrants actually belong to a larger group of organisms, or are individual members of a particular organism. Examples include the human Tim Allen , the meme-famous Longcat , and domestic dog breeds Boston Terrier , Borzoi , and American Bully  (via the online dog seller Toadline™). In addition, several joke nominations made it into the bracket such as Pet Rock , a commercial toy product, and "Garloid", a purported creature that looks like a fat innkeeper's worm.

There is no strict rule on naming conventions, so anons can freely choose to nominate organisms using their scientific names, provided that other anons also approve of this.

Humans, the sole decider of the /an/lympics results, unsurprisingly won the bracket's top seed. However, their divided nature and overrated reputation dragged them down, leading to their defeat in just the second round because more humans voted for the way cooler Giant Pacific Octopus. Besides the humans, several more top seeds turned out to be jobbers: #4 seed Pet Rock™ lost its first round match to the Plecostomus fish, while the #7 seeded Toadline™, an online pet shop selling American Bullies, was eliminated in similar fashion against the dingo, Australia's famous wild dog.

The best-performing plant-based entry was the #81 seed Watermelon, who was eliminated in round 3 by the green tree python.

Notes

  1. this Wiki chose David Attenborough  as the Homo sapiens representative because of his iconic role as the narrator of many BBC nature documentaries
  2. Toxoplasmosis is a disease, not an organism. However, it's likely understood that Toxoplasmosis is meant to represent Toxoplasma gondii, the protozoan responsible for the disease.
  3. COVID-19 is a disease, not an organism, but is understood to represent SARS-CoV-2, the specific virus causing the disease.
  4. Toadline is a sketchy-looking online seller of the dog breed "American Bully"
  5. Garloid is a 4chan inside joke about a fictional creature, based on an image of a pig stomach filled with tap water. In some images Urechis unicinctus  (fat innkeeper worm) is used to represent Garloid.
