'''Toph Beifong''' is a character from Nickelodeon's ''Avatar'' franchise. She made her official debut in ''Avatar: The Last Airbender'' second season episode ''The Blind Bandit'', where she was introduced as a blind but talented earthbender fighting in an underground tournament. Recognizing her abilities, [[Aang]] convinces Toph to join his party as his earthbending teacher, but she initially refuses because of her overprotective parents. After the party visits the Beifong estate and enters conflict with the tournament's organizer and fighters, Toph decides to help Aang's party, and eventually joins the group. Toph later appears in the sequel show ''The Legend of Korra'' as an elderly woman and earthbending mentor to the [[Korra|titular character]].
In spite of her blindness and young age, Toph is one of the most powerful earthbenders in the ''Avatar'' universe, with a tough-as-nails personality to boot. She relies on sensing the vibrations under her feet to perceive the world. Toph's blindness is often the subject of many jokes in the show, especially at the expense of [[Sokka]], the group's resident comic relief. Her primary traits make her a very interesting character for many fans; as a result she consistently ranks among the series' most popular characters.
==Tournament history==
Due to the show's general popularity on the /co/ board, Toph is seen as one of the most popular competitors in the [[Ms. /co/ tournaments]]. The earthbender is primarily voted for her appearance in ''The Last Airbender'' series, garnering support not just from the show's fans, but also from ''loli'' supporters and footfags (because of her necessity to walk barefooted).
She had a notably impressive performance in the [[Ms. /co/ 2018|inaugural Ms. /co/]] where she took down the #1 seed [[Raven]] by 3 votes in round 3, and later defeated [[Chel]] by 6 votes in the quarter-finals. She was eliminated in another close match to the eventual winner [[Jenny XJ9]], and ultimately finished 3rd place with a win over [[Kim Possible]].
Toph returned in [[Ms. /co/ 2020]] as the tournament's top seed and expected winner; however in the second round she was eliminated by [[Fang]] in a highly-anticipated match, causing some fans to throw a shitfit all because their girl lost to a dinosaur. Her loss set a new record for the worst result by a first seed, ironically overtaking Raven's round 3 exit in 2018.
On [[Ms. /co/ 2021|the following year]] Toph was once again hyped (with some more reservations) and grouped in with "Team [[Frankie Foster|F.]] [[Azula|A.]] [[Raven|R.]] T. [[Shego|S.]]" as one of the expected heavy hitters, which she fulfilled by placing 9th in the qualifiers. However, this put a massive target on her back, and by the second round she was knocked out yet again in an upset loss to ''Scooby-Doo's'' [[Daphne Blake]], prompting some users to speculate that Toph has been hit with a curse.
The earthbender returned in [[Ms. /co/ 2022]] to place at 7th seed with 210 votes. She would win in her first match against Yzma with 555 votes but would then lose to [[Gwen (Total Drama)|Gwen]] in the second round, knocking her out of the competition. Although she is eligible to return in 2023, her string of early round losses since 2020 led to anons questioning her strength as a candidate.
After her rough results the prior year, Toph already showed promising signs when she tied for the most voted received during qualifiers for [[Ms. /co/ 2023]] alongside [[Harley Quinn]], who only got the top seed due to nomination order. While some initially doubted her, she would finally break the second round curse after easily besting both Daphne Blake (vindicating her 2021 loss) and Tak. Many eyes were on the next match, which was against OC favorite [[Tiff Krust]]. Toph would manage to overcome her surprisingly easy. After defeating fellow former [[Elite Eight]] member [[Starfire]], Toph would finally re-earn her place in the Elite Eight after several years of continued failure.
She was paired against top seed Harley Quinn, only to come out on top off her continued momentum. The final four of [[Eris (Grim Adventures)|Eris]], [[Raven]], [[Wuya]], and Toph was considered among the best out of 4chan's character tournaments to date, raising anticipation who would win. Toph's supporters gave a strong push, yet in the end she would finally fell to Wuya from ''Xiaolin Showdown'', who would go on to win against Eris in the finals. Despite this late loss, Toph would end up getting her second 3rd place title in a very close bout against Raven. Many still considered this a massive victory, with Toph finally breaking her curse and proving she still had the potential to reach her highs from back in 2018. Notably, she also lost to the eventual tournament champion both times making 3rd place.
