Popeye the Sailor Man is a classic cartoon character, first making his debut in the comic strip Thimble Theatre by E.G. Segar. Becoming known for his crude manner of speech and spinach-fueled superhuman feats, he quickly grew so popular that he took over the entire strip. Popeye's notoriety would explode even further after he was adapted into a series of shorts by the legendary Fleischer Studios, turning him into an animation icon. Despite his heyday passing, he has remained in the public conscience for nearly a century as one of the earliest stars in the mediums of comics and animation.

Unsurprising with his reception, Popeye has been a part of /co/ since its inception and been involved in its Mr. /co/lympus tournaments dating back to their inaugural year. After years of acting as a gatekeeper for higher-placing men, he had his first breakout in 2024 where he managed to rank 3rd behind other mainstays Spider-Man and Kermit.

Tournament History

Popeye has been present in Mr. /co/lympus since the first 2018 tournament, where he managed to reach the top 16 before bowing out to Shaggy. He would continue to qualify for the next six subsequent tournaments, becoming a long standing member of its perfect attendance club. Despite repeated struggles to make it into the Elite Eight, he would often lose to future or returning members. The biggest fluke to date was a loss of only three votes to Dr. Livesey in 2023, who went on to lose to Hank the following round.

After years of being perceived as a midcarder, Popeye would finally get his due during Mr. /co/ 2024. Managing to match his previous round 4 record, he would finally break into the upper leagues after defeating tournament powerhouse Grim. He would give a serious shot at the crown, only to settle for bronze after Spider-Man shoved a coffee can up his ass.

Following his first year off, Popeye would return to the bracket of Mr. /co/ 2026 in strong standing, with a record 12th seed.
