Megatron
Megatron is the main antagonist of the Transformers franchise and the arch-nemesis of Optimus Prime. His exact origins and portrayal can vary depending on the continuity in which he appears, he has near always been depicted as the ruthless and tyrannical leader of the Decepticons. By extension, he has regular been at war with the opposing Autobots faction led by Optimus Prime, with the two's origins often intertwining. Initially depicted as being effectively beyond redemption, later adaptations of the character have sometimes attempted to instill more sympathy in the character to varying degrees either through his backstory or, in exceptional cases, even some form of redemption. While his exact transformation can vary, it is practically always some kind of weapon or armed vehicle befitting of his personality and frequent stature.
Tournament History
Megatron was among the 128 characters to make it into the first Mr. /co/lympus tournament held in 2018. Despite this honor, he would unceremoniously lose to comic fan favorite J. Jonah Jameson in the very first round by a clear margin. His archenemy, Optimus Prime, had a better showing before bowing out against Squidward Tentacles during the third round. Despite both qualifying for the inaugural tournament, both characters would fail to return the following year. In next few years, Optimus would narrowly return one more time in 2021 only to lose in the very first round himself. Megatron himself would remain a complete non-qualifier in Mr. /co/ for five years. He did have one smaller run during the second Tag-Team tournament, appearing with fellow Decepticon Starscream as "G1 Deception", but lost in the very first round to the "Addams Family".
As hope seemed lost for Transformers in the Mr. /co/lympus tournaments, Optimus Prime ended up making a surprise return to the bracket in Mr. /co/lympus 2023. While his return could be attributed in part to weird vote shenanigans that took place during /co/'s qualifier rounds that year, it didn't keep Optimus from pulling off a surprisingly strong run to that year's Elite Eight, claiming 4th in the end. This completely rewrote the perception of his franchise within the tournaments, and as a result the Decepticons appeared ready to take advantage of that fact. Megatron started having a presence in the tournament threads during Mr. /co/ 2023, and would continue to have some attention brought around him later on during further tournament speculation. While he did have a second short-lived run during Tag-Team 2023 (in 2024), the biggest event for Megatron was coming up later in the year.
While Megatron was expected to have a good shot at returning to the main bracket during Mr. /co/lympus 2024 with his archenemy sitting the year out due to the Elite Eight rule, what was less expected was to see three Decepticons all make the bracket. Megatron got an alright result in qualifiers as the 89th seed, but likely much to his ire ended up seeded notably lower than Starscream, the 53rd seed and a complete newcomer to Mr. /co/. (The final Deception to qualify by almost a hair was Soundwave, who largely fell to the wayside compared to the other two.) Coming off the general Transformers hype going into the tournament, Megatron would have a fairly active push in the form of various roleplay. Some of this focused on his rivalry with the Autobots, particularly Optimus Prime, or more humorously Starscream gloating over his higher seed and hoping to last longer than Megatron on the bracket. After a surprisingly tough first bout against Robbie Rotten, the hopes of him going further were quashed relatively quick once he ran into Commissioner Gordon right before a potential dream match with the Joker following a classic joke that had been reignited by a key plotline in the oft-lambasted movie Joker: Folie à Deux. This unfortunate luck did mark the end of Megatron's 2024 run, with him going down right alongside Starscream. Both would retain minor thread presence in later rounds. Outside their main campaigning, both would try to one-up Optimus Prime's legendary GETposts from the prior year. Despite a smaller victory or two, both would end up frequently losing out on GETs, a fact made funnier when several anons once again started getting digits for CHADimus Prime.
With Megatron back on the radar, it will be seen if he can return once again when he's once again eligible (now alongside his archenemy) during Mr. /co/lympus 2025.
