Mai Shiranui
| Mai Shiranui | Mai Shiranui |
Mai Shiranui is a character from SNK's Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series of fighting games. The ninja heiress became an instant fan favorite due to her upbeat personality and massive sex appeal. Her story in the games typically revolve around her never-ending love quest for Andy Bogard, a fellow ninjutsu practitioner and brother of series protagonist Terry Board. Her affection often goes unrequited due to Andy being a̶ ̶t̶r̶u̶b̶o̶ ̶f̶a̶g̶ too concentrated on his training and viewing her through more platonic lens.
In the KoF timeline/games, Mai made her mark by being a member of the very first iteration of Team Women Fighters, along with King and Yuri of the Art of Fighting series. Her attempts in pursuing Andy are more successful, as he actually reciprocates her feelings. She has appeared in nearly every installment except XII, which resulted in the "No Mai, No Buy" meme.
She has made various guest appearances some Metal Slug spinoffs, the 5th and 6th Dead or Alive games, the Capcom/SNK crossovers, and Street Fighter 6. She did not appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, however, because C̶E̶R̶O̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶r̶u̶n̶ ̶b̶y̶ ̶f̶a̶g̶s̶ Smash is a game for "good boys and girls."
Tournament History
Mai missed out in the first year of the tournaments, instead debuting in Queen of /v/ '20. Her run was cut short in a rather ironic way, as the pyrokinetic kunoichi was defeated by the ice fairy Cirno in the second round.
Despite Queen of /v/ 2021 having her enter with her lowest seed, it also saw her best performance. She secured victory in Round 1 against Hat Kid and Round 2 against Kazooie. She was then defeated by Fire keeper in Round 3.
The next 2 years went by without Mai up until she managed to successfully qualify for Queen of /v/ 2024, most likely due to being announced as a guest character for Street Fighter 6. Her good fortune would end as she was defeated immediately in the first round by Misty (at least water beating fire actually makes sense).
Mai failed to qualify for Queen of /v/ 2025, but managed to secure victory in the Next 128 side tournament.
