King of /v/ 2025

King of /v/ 2025 was the seventh edition of the annual King of /v/ tournament. It began on December 5th, 2025 and ended on the 15th of that same month.

The Elite Eight line-up for the tournament was largely made up of characters who previously made quarterfinals or higher in previous tournaments. In fact, five of them made their third respective appearances: Wario (previously 2019 and 2021), Phoenix Wright (2019 and 2022), Solid Snake (2019 and 2023), Scout (2020 and 2023), and two-time runner-up Dr. Eggman (2021 and 2023). Doomguy would also finally return for the first time since his runner-up run in the very first iteration of the tournament. Alongside the returning six, the top 8 was rounded out by the inclusion of two newcomers: King Dedede from Kirby and Arthas Menethil from Warcraft. The line-up as a whole was lauded by a lot of anons.

The finals would end up being between Scout and Wario, both regularly considered as two of the strongest powerhouses throughout King's history. After a fairly close final bout between the two, the Scout would end up coming out ahead of the greedy heavyweight to become the seventh character to be crowned king. On top of being the first Valve character to win a tournament, Scout was also notably the first champion in King of /v/ to have been present in at least one prior Elite Eight line-up before his winning year. His win was largely acclaimed by anons, with the finals and subsequent afterparty threads also being subject to a lot of praise. While not as highly ranked, the tournament as a whole has seemed to mostly rank as a good outing overall based on early reactions, being considered a fun event in spite of a few flaws.

How to nominate

• Character must appear in a video game (vidya)
• You must post the image, type the character name AND the correct series name (e.g. [I nominate] Link from Legend of Zelda)
• 12 replies / (You)s are needed in a single thread to qualify as a nominee.
• One nominee per post only
• Check the nomination list (Ctrl+F, click the "three vertical dots" icon, and enter character name) to see if your guy is already nominated

Character / series eligibility

• FOTM Clause: Characters who first appeared at the month before the start of this contest (November 1st and later) are banned.
• Grandfather Clause: All characters who have previously made it into the Queen or King of /v/ tournaments, and are not banned by the Elite 8 rule, are eligible to participate regardless of any other restrictions (with the exception of Dante's guns).
• Visual novels / eroge games / galgames are allowed (e.g. Fate, Steins;Gate, Hunie Pop)
• Characters debuting in non-vidya media that is part of an established vidya franchise are accepted. (e.g. Miss Pauling first appeared in WAR! Comic, a tie-in webcomic to Team Fortress 2's WAR! Update. Fate/Apocrypha is originally a light novel, but Jeanne d'Arc also appears in the gacha game Fate/Grand Order; furthermore, the Fate franchise began as a visual novel. Uma Musume was first announced as a mobile gacha game, but it was delayed to the point that the anime came out first; regardless, both the game and the anime are equally popular among fans.)
• Characters debuting in a game that is part of a non-vidya / multimedia franchise are accepted (e.g. Android 21 from Dragon Ball FighterZ is a game-original fighter despite being part of the wider Dragon Ball manga series. Iroha Tamaki is the protagonist of Magia Record, a mobile gacha game spinoff of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which began as a 2011 anime.)
• Characters that do not debut in a video game may be accepted if they are deemed to have a sufficiently strong presence in /v/ board culture, or are better known for their video game appearance. (e.g. Geralt @ The Witcher, AM @ I Have no Mouth)
• Characters who are not male/female or whose gender is unknown are eligible for both Queen and King tournaments, but if they appear in the main bracket in the Queen contest, they will be ineligible for nomination in King (and vice versa).
• Spinoffs and crossovers are counted as separate series. This rule mainly applies to characters debuting and/or are better known from said series. (e.g. Leona @ King of Fighters, Joker @ Persona, Sora @ Kingdom Hearts, Master Hand @ Super Smash Bros., Wario @ Wario series)
  • However, if a given character has previously appeared in another game prior to being featured in a spinoff/crossover/guest appearance, they will be entered under their original series whenever the host deems it convenient.
• No fan-made characters, including memes, OCs and custom characters (e.g. Anonymous Guy, Coomer, Coldsteel the Hedgeheg, Create-A-Player from NBA 2K )
• No inanimate objects (e.g. L-Block, Ebony & Ivory)

Any successful nominees will be consolidated into a single massive group where voters select the guys that they want to advance. There is no restriction on how many guys they can select. This format is called Approval voting. After the round ends, 128 guys with the most votes will advance into the bracket. Ties are broken by whoever gets properly nominated earlier.

Tournament Format

The tournament bracket.
Version within /v/'s filesize limit can be found here.

Format: 128 characters, single-elimination bracket. 7 rounds, 7 days. Characters are seeded based on their rankings in the qualifying poll, but this doesn't affect the randomized bracket.

• Each round lasts 24 hours after the link to the poll was posted. Countdowns are provided by the its.almo.st website.
• If a match is tied in votes, the better-seeded contestant advances. If a tie occurs in the final, an extra runoff vote is held instead.
• All guys who reach at least quarter-finals will be granted Elite Eight status, making them temporarily ineligible for King of /v/ 2026.
• Losers of the quarter-finals will play a 4-way consolation match in order to rank from 5th-8th. This will take place during the semi-finals.
• Semi-final losers will play each other at the final round to decide 3rd place.
• Lastly, the winner of the final match will ascend into /v/alhalla as the 2025 King of /v/, and will permanently retire from the tournament.

Voting policy:

• You must log-in to a Gmail account in order to vote. All emails will be anonymous to the organizer and other voters.
• You must answer one or more questions related to 4chan and /v/ culture before you can access the voting form.
• You must vote on all match-ups. In other words, no abstaining.
• You can change your votes at any time.

Barred from King of /v/

Due to a draw happening in the fourth round and no seeding to determine that match's winner, one of the Quarter-finals matches ended up being a three-way, ultimately giving this contest an Elite Nine instead of the usual Eight. The champion Ryu K. Rool, a joke hybrid of Ryu Hayabusa and King K. Rool created as an accident during Queen of /v/ 2025's Afterparty, was unanimously praised by anons as a bona-fide trve pick worthy of the Barred title.

Due to an unusually high amount of characters getting barred by the three per series limit, some of them were included in place of the lowest seeded contestants. The rivalry between two finalists of 2024's Barred - The Grox and Ichiro Dazai was considered the highlight, with both of them clashing in Round 4. After pulling off a very slim victory, Ichiro went on to win the entire contest, claiming a second side tournament Champion title to his name.

With some anons feeling a bit homesick for the Losers' Bracket that was the main gimmick of the 2023 contest, one anon took it upon himself to host something akin to it. However, instead of 4-way matches with new contestants being added after each round, he chose a far simpler approach, featuring 64 Round 1 jobbers duking it out in a regular 1v1 format and no more entrants down the line. The victor was Nahobino from Shin Megami Tensei.
